How to Be Fuel-Efficient When Driving

2022 Nissan Sentra Driving Around a Curve

As gas prices steadily increase, you’re likely looking for ways to conserve as much fuel as possible when you’re traveling throughout the Arlington area. Most new Nissan vehicles are designed to achieve optimal efficiency, but there are still methods you can implement on a daily basis to improve fuel efficiency. Discover some helpful tips on how to be fuel-efficient, below!

5 Fuel-Efficient Driving Habits

Whether you’re frequently commuting to Memphis for work, or you intend on hitting the highway for a weekend road trip, there are fuel-efficient driving habits that you can pick up to save money on fuel wherever you go:

  1. Don’t Put Too Much Force on the Accelerator: The harder you press on the gas pedal, the more fuel you use. Accelerate smoothly and take about five seconds to bring your vehicle up to 10 mph from a standstill.
  2. Plan Ahead for Traffic: When you’re sitting in traffic, or traffic is stop-and-go, it wastes fuel and puts stress on your car’s drivetrain. Leave at least 15 minutes early to avoid rush hour traffic. Or, try to find a shortcut to your destination.
  3. Avoid Driving High Speeds: When you drive at higher speeds, your car uses more fuel. To be as fuel-efficient as possible, like on the highway for instance, keep your speed between 55 and 65 mph (just make sure you’re following the speed limit).
  4. Come to Slow Stops: Rather than harshly pressing on the brakes, allow your vehicle to coast to a stop. How can you save fuel while driving on hills? Reduce your speed as you’re going uphill, then use your car’s forward momentum to coast downhill.
  5. Try to Avoid Using the Air Conditioner Frequently: Your car’s air conditioning system can increase its fuel consumption by up to 20%. When you turn the air conditioner on, use the recirculate function instead of leaving it on full blast.
